Hard Turning

What is Hard Turning?

Hard turning is turning hardened steel (typically 45–70 HRC) with a rigid lathe and CBN or ceramic tooling, often replacing a grinding operation. Done on a stiff, accurate machine it reaches fine finishes and tight tolerances dry, with much shorter cycle times than grinding.

It demands high machine rigidity and thermal stability, which is why hard-turning-capable lathes command a premium.
