Chip Load (Feed per Tooth)

What is Chip Load?

Chip load (feed per tooth) is how much material each cutting edge removes per revolution. It, with SFM, sets the feed rate and controls tool life and finish — too little rubs and work-hardens; too much overloads the edge.

Getting chip load right for the tool and material is the core of good feeds-and-speeds.
