Depth of Cut (DOC)

What is Depth of Cut?

Depth of cut (DOC) is how deep the tool engages the material — axial (down) and radial (sideways) — per pass. It's a primary lever on material removal rate and on the load placed on the tool and machine.

Roughing uses big DOC for speed; finishing uses light DOC for accuracy and finish.
