Distance Between Centers

What is Distance Between Centers?

Distance between centers (DBC) is the longest workpiece a lathe can hold between its headstock and tailstock centers — the machine's maximum turning length. With swing, it defines the size envelope of parts a lathe can produce.

Long-bed lathes with large DBC handle shafts and rolls; short-bed machines favor chucking work.
