Bone plates turn a deceptively simple profile into a dense manufacturing problem: thin contoured sections, multiple screw interfaces, edge condition, surface requirements and a complete record of how the part was made.
Why the geometry is difficult
A plate may combine freeform surfaces, varying thickness, closely spaced holes and orientation-specific screw interfaces. Workholding must support the part without distorting thin regions or blocking access. A multi-setup process can succeed, but datum transfer and accumulated error must be planned rather than discovered at final inspection.
Machining is only one layer
Burr control, edge break, surface finish, cleaning and handling can matter as much as nominal geometry. The manufacturing traveler should make each handoff visible so a correct machined feature is not compromised by uncontrolled finishing or mixed after an outside process.
Inspection strategy
Inspection should follow function. Features that establish plate-to-bone fit, screw trajectory or assembly compatibility need an appropriate datum structure and measurement method. Optical systems and CMMs can complement gauges and surface methods; no single instrument answers every question.
