HSS (High-Speed Steel)

What is HSS?

HSS (High-Speed Steel) is a tough tool-steel cutting material that holds a sharp edge and tolerates interrupted cuts and less-rigid setups better than carbide — at lower cutting speeds. It's common for drills, taps, and tooling on manual machines.

HSS is cheaper and more forgiving than carbide but can't match its speed or tool life in production.
