Conventional Milling

What is Conventional Milling?

In conventional (up) milling the cutter rotates against the feed, so each tooth starts at zero chip thickness and rubs before biting. It tolerates backlash and hard skin better, which is why it suited older manual machines.

On rigid, backlash-free CNC machines, climb milling is usually preferred for finish and tool life.
