Beyond the Quote
The machine-to-production dossier
The price is only the beginning. Before you compare machines, compare what it will take to put each one to work: an independent, visual dossier with a worked new-versus-used cost example, an evidence map and three fillable decision sheets.

The missing half
A quote answers the price. Not the whole decision.
Five questions for buyers, operators and the people responsible for turning a machinery decision into a working operation.
- What exact machine am I comparing?Model, generation, control and included options. A shared model name is not a shared configuration.
- What is established, and by whom?A source-backed specification is useful. It does not establish the condition of a serial-numbered unit.
- What will it cost beyond the quote?Removal, transport, placement, utilities, tooling and startup. Unknown amounts stay unknown.
- What must be proved on my actual job?Material, setup, cycle, inspection and acceptance. A striking demo is not the same as your production test.
- Who owns the next unresolved step?Give every consequential unknown an owner, a source request and a decision date.
Read the worked example, then make your own dossier on the working sheets. No universal score and no hidden recommendation.
What is inside
Eighteen pages, from the exact machine to the first good part.
Diagrams, a worked example and three sheets you can fill in, save and reuse with your shortlist.
- p. 3The ownership graphThe machine is one node; the decision is a system of nine workstreams.
- p. 4Like-for-likeCompare the job first, then the machines: what to normalize before a specification becomes a decision.
- p. 5A real reference exampleThe Haas VF-2SS model reference: what a specification tells you, and what it leaves to prove.
- p. 6The evidence layerObserved, reported, inferred, unknown: a published fact is not a machine-specific verification.
- pp. 7–8A worked cost exampleHypothetical new and used routes: a 40,000 purchase gap becomes a 2,000 entered-cost gap, and what could reverse it.
- pp. 9–10The actual job and the handoffYour acceptance test is evidence; a demonstration is not. Give every open step an owner.
- p. 11Two purchase routesNew and used are different questions: what each route still has to prove.
- p. 12A request you can reuseA supplier email that asks for a decision packet, not another brochure.
- pp. 13–15Three working sheetsA decision brief, an entered-cost sheet and an evidence and owner log: fill them in a PDF reader, save or print.
- pp. 16–17From dossier to action, sources and methodWhere to take the research next, the eight sources and the limits of every figure.
Plus the cover and the back page. No JavaScript, macros or remote submission in the PDF: what you type in the sheets stays in your copy.

Who it is for
For the whole machinery decision.
New and used machines, any brand.
- Buyers comparing new and used machines, or quotes that do not line up.
- Operators and production leads who have to make the machine work on the actual job.
- Owners and managers responsible for turning a machinery decision into a working operation.

Sources and limits
Inspectable sources. Explicit boundaries.
Every figure in the dossier names its source basis; these are the eight sources behind it.

Public sources reviewed October 14, 2026. Original educational synthesis, not a market census or a comparative product test. The Haas figures are MBB-reported model values, not revalidated against an exact OEM configuration. Every cost and delay figure is a stated assumption, not a quotation or an observed outcome, and missing costs are not zero.
