Pull Stud (Retention Knob)

What is Pull Stud?

A pull stud (retention knob) threads into the back of a steep-taper toolholder; the machine's drawbar grips it to pull the holder tightly into the spindle. Pull-stud style must match the machine — CAT and BT of the same size use different studs.

A worn or wrong pull stud causes poor tool seating, runout and even tool release.
