Hobbing is a gear-cutting process in which a rotating multi-tooth cutter (the hob) and the workpiece turn together in a timed ratio, generating gear teeth continuously as the hob feeds across the blank. It is the most common, most productive method of cutting external spur and helical gears and splines.
Dedicated gear hobbing machines dominate volume gear production; the same tooth forms can be approximated on a multi-axis machining center for prototypes. Finishing is often by gear grinding or shaving for high quality classes.
