Manufacturing language without the fog
A shared vocabulary keeps Formula 1 engineering content useful to machinists, buyers, students and fans.
5-axis machining
Machining with three linear axes and two rotary axes, used in indexed or simultaneous strategies to improve access and control multi-face geometry.
Autoclave
A pressure vessel used to cure composite laminates under controlled heat, pressure and vacuum conditions.
CMM
Coordinate measuring machine; a system that measures points and geometric relationships within a defined coordinate frame.
CFD
Computational fluid dynamics; numerical simulation used to study fluid flow, heat transfer and aerodynamic behavior.
CT scanning
Industrial computed tomography; X-ray projections reconstructed into volumetric data for internal and external evaluation.
Datum
A theoretically exact reference used to establish the coordinate system and constrain a part for manufacture or inspection.
EDM
Electrical discharge machining; material removal by controlled electrical discharges, useful for hard conductive materials and intricate geometry.
First article
The documented verification of a part or process against released requirements before broader production proceeds.
MGU-K
Motor Generator Unit–Kinetic; the electrical machine that recovers and deploys energy through the drivetrain in the F1 power unit.
NDT
Non-destructive testing; methods used to evaluate a part without destroying its intended usefulness.
Out-time
The accumulated time a temperature-sensitive composite material spends outside its specified cold-storage condition.
Right-first-time
A production objective focused on releasing correct parts without avoidable rework, scrap or repeated inspection loops.
Traceability
The records that connect a part to material, process, revision, inspection, assembly and life history.
Voxel
A volumetric pixel; the basic element in a three-dimensional CT data set.
Wind-tunnel correlation
The process of comparing tunnel, simulation and track behavior so each test environment can be interpreted reliably.
How MBB uses technical terms
Definitions describe established manufacturing concepts. They do not reveal or imply access to a team's confidential design. When a term has a regulation-specific meaning, the current FIA text controls. When a machine, partner or process is named, the page links to the official public source.
The glossary also acts as the connective tissue across the reference. A reader arriving through a fan search can move into real manufacturing context; a machinist can move from a process term to teams and documented equipment relationships; a buyer can continue into Machine Blue Book's machine and value directories.
Primary sources and verification
Official sources control current rules, specifications, rosters and relationships. MBB last checked this page on September 28, 2026.
