Aerospace & Defense Standards, Approvals and Designations

What the major acronyms mean, what they do not mean, and why machine capability must be connected to process control, records and customer flowdowns.

Quality-management foundations

ISO 9000

The vocabulary and fundamental concepts for quality management. It helps organizations use quality terms consistently; it is not the certifiable requirements standard.

Open reference →

ISO 9001

The auditable quality-management-system requirements standard. Confirm the revision required by the contract and the transition status of any certificate; a new ISO 9001 edition was published in 2026.

IAQG 9100 / AS9100

The aviation, space and defense quality-management standard built on ISO 9001 with sector additions. Certification belongs to the named organization, site and scope—not to an individual CNC machine.

IAQG 9110 and 9120

9110 addresses aviation maintenance organizations; 9120 addresses distributors. Neither is a generic substitute for the 9100 scope used by design and manufacturing organizations.

Part and process evidence

9102 first article inspection

A structured first article inspection framework used to show that the production process can produce the defined characteristics. It does not convert every later part into an accepted part without ongoing controls.

Open reference →

9103 key characteristics

Guidance for managing variation in characteristics whose control has significant influence on fit, performance, service life or manufacturability.

Open reference →

9145 APQP and production-part approval

Aerospace advanced product quality planning and production-part approval practices used to manage risk and readiness across product realization.

Open reference →

9146 foreign-object damage prevention

A framework for controlling foreign-object damage risk through planning, training, housekeeping, accountability and process discipline.

Open reference →

Nadcap

An industry-managed accreditation program for critical special processes. Scope may include heat treating, chemical processing, coatings, NDT, welding, measurement and other process families. Verify the supplier, site, commodity and current scope.

Open reference →

ASME Y14.5 and GD&T

The U.S. design language for communicating geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. The drawing revision and referenced standard govern interpretation; software defaults are not authority.

Open reference →

ISO/IEC 17025

Competence requirements for testing and calibration laboratories. Accreditation scope matters: a laboratory may be competent for specified measurements without covering every measurement a job requires.

Open reference →

FAA production approvals

The FAA distinguishes a production certificate, a parts manufacturer approval and a technical standard order authorization. These approvals concern the approved production system or article and do not make a machine tool “FAA certified.” Always verify the approval holder and current FAA record.

Defense and export-control designations

ITAR

U.S. defense-trade controls administered by the Department of State. Registration or authorization questions depend on the organization, activities, articles, technical data and transactions—not on the presence of a CNC machine.

Open reference →

EAR and ECCN

The Export Administration Regulations are administered by the Department of Commerce. An Export Control Classification Number classifies an item on the Commerce Control List; it is not a quality grade.

Open reference →

NIST SP 800-171

Security requirements for protecting controlled unclassified information in nonfederal systems when applicable requirements are imposed. Revision 3 is the current NIST publication; contracts may specify implementation and assessment obligations.

Open reference →

DFARS 252.204-7012

A defense-contract clause addressing covered defense information, cyber incident reporting and related safeguards. Applicability comes from the contract and flowdowns.

Open reference →

CMMC

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program assesses cybersecurity requirements at levels tied to the information and contract. It is a cybersecurity program, not a product-quality certification.

Why machine changes matter

A move, control upgrade, spindle replacement, new postprocessor, fixture change, inspection-method change or altered coolant strategy can affect the approved manufacturing process. Whether it triggers a new first article, capability study, validation, customer notice or approval depends on the drawing, contract, quality system and customer requirements. Preserve the before-and-after configuration and obtain the required authorization before releasing product.

Buyer and seller language: say that a machine was used in aerospace production only when supportable. Do not describe the machine itself as “AS9100 certified,” “Nadcap approved” or “ITAR certified.” Those labels normally attach to organizations, scopes, processes, registrations or contractual controls.

Machine and process connections

5-axis and multi-axis machines

Research platforms used for complex structural, engine and flight-control geometry.
